Father’s Day began in 1910, after the loving daughter of a veteran and widower campaigned for a special day to honor dads. But what inspired young Sonora Smart Dodd to devote her life to making this day happen? While attending church, Sonora was inspired by a Mother’s Day sermon and decided that devoted fathers, like her own, deserved a special day as well. Sonora’s father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a widower. When Sonora was just 16 years old, her mother passed away, leaving her father to care for the couple’s 6 children on his own. William and his wife both had additional adult children from previous marriages as well- for a total of 14! He was described as a very loving and devoted family man who took on both parent’s roles. The idea was well-received in Spokane, but Sonora had bigger plans. She spent the majority of her life travelling the country to spread the word. The holiday proposal had some pushback at first, but gained steam during World War II. Finally, Sonora’s proposed Father’s Day was officially proclaimed a holiday in 1972.
